Description: 11 X 14 Vintage Print of 'Madame Pele' by Hawaiian Painter D. Howard Hitchcock. Very good condition, still in the original plastic sleeve with a foam core backing board. D. Howard Hitchcock (1861-1943) was a well loved Hilo born artist who received his artistic training in San Francisco, New York and Paris. Returning to his island home, he painted many of Kilauea's eruptions. During his lifetime exhibits of his new paintings were always news worthy events in Hawai'i. Painted circa 1927, Hitchcock considered his painting Madam Pele to be his masterpiece. The original painting measures 4 ft. x 7 ft. and is now part of the permanent museum collection at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The image of Pele is depicted exactly as he saw her during the summit eruption of Mauna Loa in 1899. "Pele" Print By: D.
