Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) desirable antique print "Capt Thos Coram." A portrait of the philanthropist Thomas Coram (1668-1751) who founded the Foundling Hospital after seeing the plight of children left abandoned in the streets, many of whom were young babies close to death. In this famous full-length portrait of him by William Hogarth, he wears a stout, serviceable greatcoat of rich reddish brown, his abundant white hair framing a weather-beaten face. The globe by his left foot reminds us of his sea-faring past. DATE PRINTED: c.1822 using Hogarth's original plate first published in 1796 (dated on the print) from a painting made in 1740. SIZE: The printed area is approximately 54 x 38 cm, 21 x 15 inches (large) with wide margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by William Nutter (British, 1754/59–1802) from the original picture by Wm. Hogarth. William Hogarth FRSA (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". PROVENANCE: Published in 'The Works of William Hogarth, from the original plates restored by James Heath', London: Baldwin and Cradock. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies with recut plates.TYPE: Antique copper plate etching and engraving printed on paper. AUTHENTICITY: This is an authentic antique print, published at the date stated above. I do not offer reproductions. It is not a modern copy.
