1870 Mitchell’s School Geography w/ Braille Page & Funny Victorian Student Notes

Description: A unique look at Victorian student life! An 1870 edition of Mitchell’s School Geographies, Book 5, Physical Geography by John Brocklesby — with an inserted Braille page (Geography and Elizabeth are written on the page in pencil) and notes in at least four different students’ handwriting throughout, about half of them dated with the year, ranging from the 1870s to the 1880s. Hardcover with a cloth spine (carefully sewn back on at some point, probably by a student). Illustrated throughout with world maps in color. Published by Butler & Co. in Philadelphia in 1870. Clearly a handed down textbook over two or three decades. The notes include rude references to a Catholic schoolteacher, expressions of boredom, sharing of jokes with another student, comments on the text, notes and underlining, practicing name writing, and a substantial original poem on the back page. Measures 12 x 10 x 1/2 inches. In fair to poor preowned condition - but all of it good evidence for school life in the 19th century. The Braille page is in very good shape, with sharp edges and not much wear. I am not certain what the page says. The covers of the book are worn, faded, and darkened. The spine has been sewn back on twice and pages are therefore mostly in place. The top half of the pages are loose in the second half of the book but do stay put. Notes are throughout, and blank pages (behind maps) and endpapers have been put to good use by the students. Map colors are somewhat faded but not much.
