1872 Democratic party endorsed candidate presidential campaign token medal coin

Description: Horace Greeley, an outspoken opponent of slavery and black suffrage during his long career as the chied editor of the New York City Tribune, was the unlikely recipient of the only endorsement for the Democratic Party. Not since 1824 and never again has the Democratic party not had its own presidential candidate. Ulysses S Grant was unanimously re-nominated at the 1872 Republican National Convention, but his intra-party opponents organized the Liberal Republican Party and held their own convention. The 1872 Liberal Republican convention nominated Horace Greeley, a New York newspaper publisher, and wrote a platform calling for civil service reform and an end to Reconstruction. Democratic Party leaders believed that their only hope of defeating Grant was to unite around Greeley, and the 1872 Democratic National Convention nominated the Liberal Republican ticket. Thus, the only election since Jackson the Democrats didn't have their own candidate. A very worn condition original 1872 Horace Greeley brass political token.
