Description: The Water Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby. By Rev Charles Kingsley, Canon of Westminster. Illustrated by Sir Noel Paton & Percival Skelton. 1874: New Edition, Macmillan & Co. Tom, a poor orphan, is employed by the villainous chimney-sweep, Grimes, to climb up inside flues to clear away the soot. While engaged in this dreadful task, he loses his way and emerges in the bedroom of Ellie, the young daughter of the house who mistakes him for a thief. He runs away, slips into a cooling stream, falls fast asleep, and becomes a water baby. In this new life, he meets all sorts of aquatic creatures, including an engaging old lobster, other water babies, and at last reaches St Branden's Isle where he encounters the fierce Mrs Bedonbyasyoudid and the motherly Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby. After a long and arduous quest to the Other-end-of-Nowhere young Tom achieves his heart's desire. There are a number of pages advertising to the rear of the book. The book is in what I consider to be clean vintage order. Case of book is sound. Bound in blue cloth with gilt title and bands to spine. Boards and spine show age related wear/marks. Bottom/top spine and corners of boards lightly rubbed/bumped. Front hinge is sound (second & last images) as is rear hinge. End papers are tanned. Some light marks to following end papers. Dedications with dates (1876 & 1949) to half title page (image three). Title page under tissue. Frontis opposite has received the fairly neat attention of a junior artist at sometime in the past (image four). Further three illustrations untouched. Odd light age spots. Bright, clean and tightly bound internally. Overall a clean used copy. Please be aware this is an antique item, 150 years old, & will show signs of age and use throughout. I am happy to answer any queries you may have in relation to the title, will do my best to answer same day. Will include FREE careful postage and packing via Royal Mail. Thank you. I'm the (not so) fortunate nominee chosen to dispose of a large collection of books that have been in our family for many years. We've also moved house recently and I've made up my mind to make (some) inroads into our own collection of books. Some weird and wonderful titles, many very rare, particularly from the family library. I'll be listing them whenever time allows. Please keep dipping into the listings as I'm working my way through a large assortment of different books (and some other small/postable items). Any book dealers/collectors that would be interested in offering on a number of books, in one lot, then I will always do my best to shave the price by as much as possible. This would only apply to books listed as B.I.N. (I'll let the auctions run to give a fair chance to anyone interested). Please just get in touch with a list of what you're interested in and I'll get back to you with a price...same day in most cases. Thank you. I have given what I consider to be a fair and accurate description but if you have any questions at all about anything, please just ask.....before bidding. Please study the large images above to get an idea of the condition of the item........as usual any questions I am very happy to respond. Book(s) will always be carefully packed. I always obtain a proof of posting from the Post Office when your item(s) is/are dispatched.
