Description: LANDMARKS OF STEUBEN COUNTY, NEW YORK Edited by Hon. Harlo Hakes Assisted by L. C. Aldrich, and Others 1896 First Edition D. Mason & Comnpany, Publishers Syracuse, New York Leather, 530 pages From the title you might think this book is about notable buildings, places, edifices, monuments, etc., in Steuben County, New York, but it is more about the history of Steuben County, its towns, hamlets and villages, and especially the men instrumental in founding and devolving them. Not only is this concerned with the municipal level, but also business, education, religion, etc. The book focuses on the biographical and genealogical. In fact, all of the illustrations are portraits, some steel engravings, others photographic. (We showed a small sampling of the illustrative content in the sample pictures.) While 21st century reprints (in a number of formats) are abundant, this 1896 First Edition is quite scarce and expensive if you can find a copy. It is also quite heavy (6 1/2 lbs by itself). This copy has condition issues - both boards are detached. Pages 515-530 are separated and a few pages have edge tears. The cover has much wear but the title in gilt on the spine is easily legible. This is an ex-library book with some markings. 7 1/2" x 10 1/8" x 2 7/8"
