MacLellan (1885-1961) created more fifty colorful covers for The Saturday Evening Post between 1912 and 1936. MacLellan studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and wasmentored by the great Howard Pyle of the Brandywine School. He enjoyed avaried career, creating designs for stained glass windows and illustratingads for Marshall Fields and calendars for Rand McNally. He was also aprolific contributor to the Post, illustrating 44 covers between1913 and 1936. His later covers featured women almost exclusively, but hisearlier covers were more varied, featuring soldiers, teachers, andchildren. One red-haired boy makes an appearance in more than a dozencovers. MacLellan lived much of his life in Wilmington, Delaware. His paintings canbe found at the Delaware Art Museum and the Brandywine River Museum.
