BENHAM C. DANGERS. Each tile print is fired onto a ceramic tile backed with cork. There is also a cloth and metal loop attached to the back for hanging. These ceramic prints were produced most likely after WWII perhaps as late as the 1950's from original Benham Dangers sketches made in 1943 during WWII when he was serving as an artist correspondent for the United States Army and stationed in Alaska. Each print depicts a realistic sketch of an Alaska native. One is labeled Sarah Ugbaok, Teller, Alaska, July 12th, 1943. I believe her family name was transcribed incorrectly and is actually Okbaok. She was born in 1878 and lived in the Teller Mission, Alaska per the Alaska Bureau of Indian Affairs 1940 Census Records. Her descendants still live there. [Reference: http://sites.rootsweb.com/~coleen/biacensusrecords.html ] The second is labeled Johnny Glass, Galena, Alaska, June 23, 1943. Each tile measures approximately 6 by 6 by 1/4 inches. The tiles were produced by Wheeling Tile company of Wheeling, West Virginia. Wheeling tile was in business from 1912 to 1962. CONDITION: These tile prints are in excellent vintage condition. The images are sharp. The tiles are clean and the cork backing is intact. There are very little, very light marks to the ceramic tiles. There are a couple of very small, very minor nicks and chips to the tile edge and corners as shown in the photographs. Please see photographs. SHIPPING: Free USPS Priority shipping for USA addresses.
