Washington - July 1st is the official birthday of the U.S. postage stamp. One of the first ever issued was this 5 cent stamp bearing the picture of Benjamin Franklin. It was issued on July 1, 1847, and was used for letters going less than 300 miles. A 10 cent stamp bearing a likeness of George Washington was used for greater distances.
