This auction is for a set of 24 pieces of Whiting Manufacturing Co Empire Sterling Silver knives. There are 12 Blunt Blade Dinner Knives, and 12 Blunt Blade Luncheon Knives. The pieces are monogrammed with an H. Overall the blades on the dinner and luncheon knives are in very good condition with the exception of three blades. One dinner knife has some scratching and 2 lunch knives has some minor gashes on the edge (see attached pictures), otherwise the blades are in overall very good condition. The dinner and luncheon blades are not original and were replaced with silver plated blades by Joseph Rodgers and Sons from Sheffield England. The blades also identify that Joseph Rodgers and Sons were cutlers for her majesty (her majesty would have been Queen Victoria). Some of the manufacturer's marks on the blades are not as clear as others and it may not be that the stamp by the manufacturer wasn't as deep as on other blades. My research also uncovered that Joseph Rodgers and Sons provided cutlery to most of the English nobility in the late 19th century, which was during the height of their popularity. I don't know when the blades were refitted but it wouldn't have been cheap for the then owner to send the knives to Rodgers and sons for re-blading. The handles on the dinner and luncheon knives have the word sterling, the Whiting lion with the "W" in the lions face, and Pat. Applied For. The dinner knives are approximately 9 1/4", and the luncheon knives are approximately 8 1/4". I don't have a scale so I am not able to disclose the silver weight of the set. These pieces are very beautiful and ready for entertaining. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you want additional pictures.
