It is an original synthesis of a vast amount of Aggadah from the Mishnah, the two Talmuds and the Midrash. Ginzberg had an encyclopedic knowledge of all rabbinic literature, and his masterwork included a massive array of Aaggadot. However he did not create an anthology which showed these Aggadot distinctly. Rather, he paraphrased them and rewrote them into one continuous narrative, which was his genius. It has five volumes, followed by two volumes of footnotes that give specific sources and those volumes are essential for the main text. It is here translated very accurately from the original German by Paul Radin. This set is unparalleled as to its artful presentation of the Literature of the Bible. It's scholarly compass regarding texts, interpretations, and history of the narrative parts and even the peculiar laws and customs of ancient Israel and the land of Judea in the Old Testament. The interpretations of the Torah, or Bible through narrative style, context, and interweaving of sections is out of the ordinary. Written by, one of, if not the most, outstanding scholar in the field of Bible sources, exegesis, background, and development. Condition. Very good, complete, and readable/study condition. No writing on the interior text pages, however it has scuff marks to covers and fraying to its edges. Each volume is integral and binding is good. Three or four volumes have some ink stamps and library labels and/or remnants of labels, on blank pages/inside covers, and some marker marks to page edges when book is closed only. Author: Rabbi Louis Ginzberg לוי גינצבורג, Levy Gintzburg, 1873 – 1953 was a Talmudist and leading figure in the Conservative Movement of Judaism of the twentieth century. He was born in Kaunas, Vilna Governorate he died in New York City. Ginzberg was born into a religious family whose piety and erudition was well known. The family traced its lineage back to the revered talmudist, halachist, and kabbalist Gaon of Vilna. Ginzberg emulated the Vilna Gaon's intermingling of 'academic knowledge' in Torah studies under the label 'Historical Judaism'. Ginzberg first arrived in America in 1899, unsure where he belonged or what he should pursue. Almost immediately, he accepted a position at Hebrew Union College and subsequently wrote articles for the Jewish Encyclopedia. Still, he had not found his niche. In 1903, he began teaching at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) in New York City, where he taught until his death. Throughout his life, all of his works were infused with the belief that Judaism and Jewish history could not be understood properly without a firm grasp of Halakhah. Instead of just studying Halakha, Louis Ginzberg wrote responsa, formal responses to questions of Jewish law.
