Description: A HISTORY BOOK LOVED BY READERS OF ALL AGES THIS BESTSELLING BOOK, ENORMOUSLY POPULAR WITH READERS AROUND THE WORLD, was actually written for children. But its appeal is so wide that it is now regarded as a classic outline of history for everyone of all ages and levels of education - rather in the chatty fashion of the famous The Story of Mankind by the Dutch-American author Hendrik Willem van Loon whose work also transcends age groups. This is how is came about: When he was young man working on his doctoral thesis in his birth-place Vienna, Ernst Gombrich was asked by the child of a friend what he was doing. He wrote down an explanation of his work as an historian in simple terms and so enjoyed doing it that he wrote an article about the knights of old and sent it to a publisher. The publisher loved it and asked Gombrich to write a full book. He did, writing in German, and the book came out in 1936. It was an immediate success with young readers as well as their parents. The Nazis, then in power in Germany, liked it a lot less than the public because they objected to the pacifism they saw in it. So they banned it. DR GOMBRICH SETTLED IN ENGLAND AND BECAME A HIGHLY RESPECTED ART HISTORIAN whose many published works are regarded as authoritative. The British conferred a knighthood on him after World War 2 and he became Sir Ernst Hans Joseph Gombrich. It was only in 2001 that he began to translate his history book for youngsters into English. Sadly, he died before it was completed but his granddaughter Leonie Gombrich and translater Caroline Mustill were able to finish the task. The charming line drawings are by Clifford Harper. It was published by Yale University Press in 2005. Reviewers have heaped praise on it. The Irish Times called it a "magical work" and The Times (London) said that now it was available in English . . . "there will be many generations of future historians who will attribute to it their life-long passion for history - and for truth." THE PAPERBACK EDITION WE OFFER IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION and it appears to have been little read - if at all. The pages are fresh, clean, crisp and unmarked and the binding is firm and square. There is a small indentation mark on the rear cover - otherwise it is a fine book with no sign of previous ownership such as an inscription or name.
