Description: For sale is a rare Italian lusterware / lustreware majolica / faience plate made in Italy in ??? It's definitely and antique and before 1900 but I am unsure how old exactly it is. I suspect it could be an 18th century example or it could be from the Neo - Renaissance period of the second half of the 19th century though I would think they'd be marked. Obviously I am clueless so if anyone out there has a good idea a quick email would be appreciated! Lusterware is a type of pottery with a metallic glaze that gives the effect of iridescence. I am sure this one is Italian. Lustre appears in Italian maiolica around 1500, and became a specialty of two relatively minor pottery towns, Gubbio , noted for a rich ruby-red, and Deruta . I am unsure of who made this as I have also seen them made at other makers like Cantagalli but Deruta is certainly a likely origin. These display type plates were likely made for weddings as a present and often have a lady in the center with something written in Latin. Here we have the name Beatrice and Title Duchess. This could be a reference to Beatrice d'Este who lived in the 15th century . Nice rim design. The piece is in great condition with some manufacturing flaws that are more evident on the underside. It displays perfectly! The dish is not marked at all which does not help me at all :( It is 1 inch tall and about 8 inches in diameter.
