Description: This primitively carved wood Madonna or Saint is standing on a pedestal painted with a full moon, a shooting star and a half moon. The main figure is dressed in voluminous cloak and gowns with veil and hands clasped in prayer. There is a cross on a white collar of the center figure. There are 4 angels 2 peering from behind clouds and another 2 at either side of the Santo. At the top is a scalloped shell and a well in front, perhaps it was meant to hold holy water. The scalloped shell design has a wax coating on part of the area . This could be an old repair. The entire piece is rustic, a folk art piece of religious devotion.A great Aunt of my husbands spent winters in Mexico from the 1920's to the mid 1940's. She and her husband built a Hacienda style home on 300 acres in Mooresville ,IN which was finished in 1947. The home was filled with all things Mexican. She had been collecting religious artifacts and furniture for decades. When she died in the 1970's we inherited this piece and have kept it over 5 decades. I believe that it was old when she first acquired it.
