Description: This is a remarkable antique handmade basket from our life-long friends family estate. Measures 14" L x 9.5" high x 10" wide. Interesting story. The family lived and traveled in South America in the late 1920's and this basket is believed to have been acquired down there. Here's a brief description from a family member: “My grandfather, Dr. Porter James Crawford, was hired by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. His first assignment out of the USA was Brazil, where he and my grandmother, my two uncles, and my mom, only 18 months old at the time (she's now 98 years old), lived for the next 6 years. My grandfather was there to promote health awareness to cities and villages along the Amazon River, and especially help stop the spread of yellow fever. Some of the small villages bestowed gifts on him. Those gifts are what we have now (in the family estate) - Spears, necklaces, baskets, dolls, a headdress, etc... (Many of the Indian artifacts will be listed soon!). My grandparents and their family's next assignment was Panama, and then Havana, Cuba until he died unexpectedly of a heart attack in December of 1946. According to my Mom, and other relatives, my grandfather would have been at the top of the list to run the newly formed World Health Organization in 1948.” This is a museum-quality piece and probably priceless to the right collector. Purchase it today and add it to your collection or resell it to a fine art collector or museum. Thanks for looking!
