Description: This is an antique stoneware bowl made by Progressive Pottery in Roseville, Ohio. Progressive only operated in the 1901-1906 time period. Their bowls have very distinctive features and may be marked or unmarked, and the marked ones may differ significantly. This one is marked "Acid Proof" and "Fire Proof" on the bottom and has the distinct decorative vertical banding on the sides of the bowl and the "gear tooth" radial ribbing on the edge of the base, which was thought to disperse heat at the time. This bowl measures about 9-5/8" in diameter, 4-5/8" high, and 10-3/4" wide with the two bail wire attachment ledges. These bowls are typically glazed on the inside (this one is dark brown), but retains a natural look on the outside. There are no cracks or breaks. I have made no attempt to clean the outside, as I think the character of the bowl as it stands allows the age to shine--it has stains, fire soot, etc. as shown, and there are the remains of the old thin wire that was used to secure a bail wire to the bowl ledges at the upper lip. There are minor marks in the glaze, small defects in the clay (bubble blowouts, etc) present at the bowl's firing, and the bail wire is missing. There is a chip on the inside of the upper lip as shown in the last photo. This bowl was used during a much simpler time in the country's history and I think it tells a great story.
