Description: Aqualung, released in March 1971 by Chrysalis Records, is the fourth studio album by the rock band Jethro Tull. The initial idea for the album was sparked by some photographs that Anderson's wife Jennie took of homeless people on the Thames Embankment. The appearance of one man in particular caught the interest of the couple, who together wrote the title song "Aqualung". The first side of the LP, titled Aqualung, contains several character sketches, including the character of the title track, and the schoolgirl prostitute Cross-Eyed Mary, as well as two autobiographical tracks, including "Cheap Day Return", written by Anderson after a visit to his critically ill father. Though it is generally regarded as a concept album, featuring a central theme of "the distinction between religion and God", the band have said there was no intention to make a concept album, and that only a few songs have a unifying theme. It was generally well-received critically and has been included on several music magazine best-of lists. The album spawned two singles, "Hymn 43" and "Locomotive Breath". In April 1971, Aqualung peaked at number four on the UK Album Chart. It peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard North American Pop Albums chart; the single "Hymn 43" hit No. 91 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is Jethro Tull's best-selling album, selling more than seven million units worldwide. Aqualung’s success signaled a turning point in the career of the band, who went on to become a major radio and touring act. THIS COPY appears to be a 1972 repress, either the Terre Haue repress or the "Club Edtion" repress. The cover description favors the former, the runout or "dead wax" info, the latter. (See Notes for both versions, below.)The Vinyl shows some rubbings from the paper sleeve only. It is in Very Good Plus [VG+] condition. The original cover, gatefold and textured, has two parallel lines across the front (see photo), presumably from rubbing against something in the past. It also has a name written in ink pen along the top edge of the front ("L. Martin", see photo) and some ringwear on the back cover. But overall, it is in Very Good [VG] condition. The inner sleeve, which is plain white with square corners and no center label hole, has about a 3" split along the bottom seam, and is starting to show browning from age. It is in Very Good Plus [VG+] condition. The included 2-sided lyric sheet is in Mint [M] condition.Relevant 1972 Terre Haute Notes- This US Chrysalis version comes in heavy cardboard textured gatefold sleeve, has green labels with orange Chrysalis logo and butterfly, and a two-sided printed lyric sheet insert. - A Side's runout etching uses Cat# MS-2035 (used by Reprise Records versions of Aqualung), even though it's on the Chrysalis label, while the B Side's runout etching uses the Chrysalis Cat#.- On sleeve's spine: "0598 Chrysalis Records Printed in U.S.A.". -Recorded at Island Studios, London. -On insert: All lyrics © 1971 by Almo Music Corp.
