Not for nothing did Art Blakey select the term Messengers to denote his musical and personal purpose at the onset of his bandleading career. Manifestly all meaningful music carries its own built-in message, and to this extenet the term could reasonably be applied to any combination of performers (even the coolest horn man has a message, no matter how diffidently stated). What is more important in Blakey's case is that his message is transmitted not merely in his music but in his words and speeches, his actions and personality. "Moanin' includes some of the greatest music Blakey produced in the studio with arguably his very best band. There are three tracks that are immortal and will always stand the test of time. The title selection is a pure tuneful melody stewed in a bluesy shuffle penned by pianist Bobby Timmons, while tenor saxophonist Benny Golson's classy, slowed "Along Came Betty" and the static, militaristic "Blues March" will always have a home in the repertoire of every student or professional jazz band. "Are You Real?" has the most subtle of melody lines, and "Drum Thunder Suite" has Blakey's quick blasting tom-tom-based rudiments reigning on high as the horns sigh, leading to hard bop. "Come Rain or Come Shine" is the piece that commands the most attention, a highly modified, lilting arrangement where the accompanying staggered, staccato rhythms contrast the light-hearted refrains. In the 1970s Thelonious' last public performances would largely be those he turned in as a member of a post-Newport, George Wein-organized traveling troupe he called "The Giants of Jazz" (possibly under Art Blakey's, or if not Art, Dizzy Gillespie's, name). To my ears the performer who stands out in the two-disc package of the concerts is Sonny Stitt. But I recall the liner-notes addressing the tension and discomfort that prevailed throughout the tour--primarily because Thelonious refused to utter as much as a grunt the whole time. And, somehow, it was determined that Blakey was the source of his unhappiness. It's an interesting footnote to this earlier recording of the Messengers with Thelonious. Were I asked to place bets, I would have guessed that the field, as usual, would belong to Art Blakey's thunder and lightning. As a musician, he was a force of nature--no drummer before, during or since Blakey has approached his phenomenal power. And yet, you simply can't listen to this Atlantic recording without sensing that the person in charge is Thelonious. Whether due to his physical presence and mysterious, unpredictable mannerisms or to compositions and playing so idiosyncratic as to keep other musicians off balance, this session could as easily be called "Thelonious Takes Charge."
