Description: Kenneth D. Mercier was born April 1, 1920, in Boston, Massachusetts. He had already served time in the military when he reenlisted on August 17, 1942, and volunteered for the paratroopers. He was sent to Camp Toccoa, GA and placed in Fox Company, 506th PIR. He proved himself as a soldier and was soon promoted to corporal. When the regiment shipped to England in preparation for D-Day, Mercier was transferred to Easy Company and made the jump into Normandy with them. He fought through Normandy and was promoted to sergeant when the unit returned to England. He parachuted into The Netherlands in Sept., 1944, for Operation Market-Garden, and then made it through the crucible of the Battle of the Bulge. When the 506th was deployed to Haguenau, Mercier was the first choice of both company commander Lt. Ronald Speirs and acting Battalion CO, Capt. Dick Winters to lead the night patrol across the river Moder. Though this patrol was featured in the "Band of Brothers" TV miniseries in the "The Last Patrol" episode, Mercier was not individually featured in most of the series. He served with Easy through the war's end.
