Gregory Perillo is an American painter best known for his romanticized, historical scenes of Native Americans in the Western United States. Perillo’s work follows the tradition of earlier painters like Frederic Remington in its idealized viewpoint of the “Old West” or frontier of American history. Born in 1929 in New York, NY to Italian immigrants, he went on to study at Pratt Institute, the School of Visual Arts, and the Arts Student League after having served in the Navy. Perillo was fascinated with the American West and met the celebrated Western painter William Robinson Leigh while traveling in Arizona, subsequently becoming his pupil. He has often traveled to Native American reservations to study the local culture and customs, and his paintings range from miniatures to murals. Perillo’s works are in many private collections, and he lives and works in New York.
