c1911 Steamer J.P. Light + Barge Leaving Dawson Yukon for Fairbanks Wharf Smiths

Description: c1911 Steamer J.P. Light + Barge Leaving Dawson Yukon for Fairbanks Wharf Smith’s Scarce original antique postcard - undated, perhaps around 1911 Published for Smith’s Book Store, Dawson, Y.T. Canada No 63 . . . 3962 Merchants' Yukon Line Steamer, J. P. Light. Merchants Yukon Line was one of two main lines that operated on The Yukon River Route which comprised many small towns on the Yukon River and its tributaries. Freight coming from Seattle and Tacoma to Yukon River points is brought to the mouth of the Yukon by either the Alaska Steamship Co. or the Pacific Coast Steamship Co. and from there is carried by the Merchants’ Yukon Line. The vessel carried freight and passengers up the Yukon to Dawson City and later Fairbanks. Steamers on the Yukon, including Portus B. Weare (also owned by Merchants’ Yukon Line) , often towed, pushed, or were lashed to barges to increase the freight they could move. Route was important after the Gold Rush and Gold being discovered in Fairbanks. There is another steamer pictured behind the Light . . . the Barge is certainly loaded up!
