Description: This is an evocative and emotionally stirring Fine Antique Old Master JESUS Christ ICON Portrait Oil Painting on Canvas, by the Scotland born early California artist, Oliver Houston (1888 - 1955.) This piece depicts the visually striking and powerful portrait of Jesus Christ during his Crucifixion. The subject wears a crown of thorns and looks up toward the sky with an anguished expression. He has a single tear streaming down his cheek, with the edges of a red cloak visible around his shoulders. Signed: "Oliver Houston" in the lower left corner. Additionally, this piece is dated on the verso of the canvas: "4/36." Approximately 17 5/8 x 21 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 14 x 18 inches. Good condition for age, with a few faint scuffs to the painted surface, and mild - moderate scuffing and edge wear to the original period antique gilded wood frame (please see photos.) Houston's original artworks rarely come up for sale on the secondary market. He is most famously known for his nautical themed paintings of American military ships, one of which, titled USS Tuscaloosa, is in the permanent collections of the United States Naval History and Heritage Command.
