"The history of the Jews in Mantua and the Mantovano is divided into several periods. The early period is almost completely obscure. Only faint echoes have reached us of Jewish life in Mantua in Roman times. The same applies to the Jewish settlement in Mantua in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Nothing is known of Jewish presence in Mantua during the High Middle Ages, and it seems that there was yet another interruption in settlement during the first half of the fourteenth century. During the second half of that century Jewish settlement in Mantua was renewed. From then to the sixteenth century the Jewish population in Mantua increased gradually. The sixteenth and the first part of the seventeenth (to the war of the Mantuan Succession) were the heyday of the Jewish community in the Dutchy. After the return from exile (1630) begins a period of reconstruction and restoration, lasting to the end of the seventeenth century. The last period under review is that of Mantua under Austrian domination in the eighteenth century. It end with the conquest of Mantua by the French at the end of that century."
