Description: In 1995, game 5 of the Western Conference semi finals. It is here where the birth of the Gone Fishing segment from Inside the NBA idea occurs. If you aren’t familiar with these segments, after a playoff team is eliminated the Inside the NBA crew show a photoshop picture of the losing team fishing since they now have all the time in the world. Back to Game 5, Kenny the Jets Smith and the Houston Rockets find themselves down three games to one in Phoenix against Charles Barkley, and the Suns. The Rockets are down big in Game 5 and things arent looking good. The Rockets call a time out. During the timeout, The Phoenix Suns gorilla mascot comes out to pump up the crowd. In the skit it is dressed in fishing gear with a few different fishing poles. He pretends to fish and at the end of each pole at the are the teams that Phoenix has knocked out thus far. On the end of the last pole is who else but the Houston Rockets. The crowd erupts and Kenny the Jets and his teammates notice this part of the skit. Kenny turns to his teammates and yells, we ain’t gone fishing! This pumps up his team, so much so that they come from behind and not only win game 5 but game 6 and 7. They move through the western finals and sweep shaq and the Orlando Magic in four games in the finals. Kenny shares this story years later while on inside the NBA. At the end of one of the NBA seasons before signing out Kenny tells his crew well it looks like we are Gone Fishing.The production company remembers his story and with that saying they come up with the gone fishing idea. They debut it the following season.
