Description: The letter was written in 1968 and SIGNED BY "J.E. Hoover" on FBI Letterhead. The autograph has not been authenticated, but is consistent with others easily found online. This letter was written to a young person who had requested information on specific individuals presumably associated with the history of the FBI. The first sentence of Hoover's reply identified an "enclosed booklet" which would contain information regarding the individuals. While not directly naming the booklet in this opening sentence, it appears that the next sentence identifies the booklet as, "The Story of the Federal Bureau of Investigation". This listing includes what I believe is the FIRST PRINTING OF THIS YOUTH BOOKLET WITH THIS SAME TITLE, "THE STORY OF THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION". While the booklet offered here is the First (I believe) Printing, it is not the one that was included with Hoover's letter sent to the young lady. They were not found at the same estate sale, and otherwise, the letter states that "other books" are "listed on the inside back cover of 'The Story of the Federal Bureau of Investigation' ". There are no other books listed on the inside back cover of this booklet. The letter and the booklet are offered here as an INTERESTING PAIR OF COLLECTIBLES ASSOCIATED WITH J. EDGAR HOOVER AND THE FBI. Now the sleuthing becomes a little more complicated. There is no date of publication, or indeed any publication or printing information anywhere in the booklet here. It is a 19-page booklet, which has "Crime Does Not Pay" behind the front cover, and a Purpose Statement on the first leaf of the booklet. Then the booklet begins on the next leaf, on page 1 (this is where pagination begins), and ends on page 19. This "Purpose" statement includes a list of 7 Congressmen who had requested this youth booklet. Six of the 7 Congressmen had Congressional service dates ending 1957 and into the 1960s. One of them, however, Robert F. Jones, ended his service in 1947. Therefore, this booklet had to have been published 1947 or earlier (i.e, Robert F. Jones would not be on this subcommittee unless he was in Congress at the time, and his time ended in 1947). Worldcat lists a 1947 book with the same title published by E.P. Dutton. This book wouldn't be the Dutton book, because this book has no publisher identified. The only other book published 1947 or earlier is a 1945 version with no publisher identified. I conclude, therefore, that this is that 1945 publication, and further, that is the FIRST PRINTING OF THAT BOOKLET. Worldcat goes on to list several versions with this same title published up to 1970. To summarize, this letter includes an FBI letter signed by J. E. Hoover dated in 1968 that was intended to answer a question from a young lady. Enclosed with the letter was a booklet. I don't have the very booklet that this young lady received, but I do have the FIRST PRINTING of this booklet published in 1945. Together, a nice pair of FBI collectibles! The booklet is in VERY GOOD CONDITION, with wear at the spine and a tear at the bottom of spine. The staple-bound booklet is a 19-page solidly bound booklet, with no marks or tears other than this spine tear. Cliff's Books EPH2
