EDGAR HOOVER - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 10/23/1946 - HFSID 17994 J. EDGAR HOOVER Hoover signed this typed letter to a type face company named Robinson in 1946, requesting a copy of their typeface catalog to help the FBI Laboratory analyze printed materials. Typed letter signed "J. E. Hoover". 1 page, 7¾x10¼, on Hoover's letterhead from the Federal Bureau Investigation with U. S. War Bonds cachet in lower left corner. Oct. 23, 1946. Addressed to Robsinson, Francisville, Louisiana. Hoover asked Robinson, evidently a typeface or typewriter company, for a catalog of their typefaces and to put the FBI on their mailing list for future catalogs. According to this letter, "The FBI Laboratory maintains a library of the type face catalogs published by various manufacturers in the United States. These catalogs are used in connection with laboratory examinations of materials obtained in official investigations." Hoover (1895-1972, born John Edgar Hoover in Washington, DC) served as the first Director of the FBI from 1924 until his death in 1972. During his 48-year term, he restored order to the department and established the world's largest fingerprint file and the FBI Academy. The FBI fought organized crime in the Prohibition era. Under his direction, the FBI also infiltrated the American Communist Party, the Ku Klux Klan and other subversive organizations. It also conducted counterintelligence during WWII and the Cold War. By the 1970s, Hoover came under frequent public criticism for his authoritarian administration, but his power was so great that no President dared to remove him. Lightly toned, stained, soiled and creased. Rust stain from paper clip in lower left corner. Tape remnants on left edge. Otherwise in fine condition. Folded once vertically and thrice horizontally.
