Description: DESCRIPTION:Antique NIPPON decorative plate / dish. Octagonal (eight-sided). Measures 9.5" in diameter, across from rim to rim. . DESIGN:A splendid bird with a long-feathered tail -- perhaps a phoenix, a barn swallow? In any case, a terrific find! This beautiful blue and white bird stands poised for flight against a mauve background, surrounded by flowers and cherry blossoms. Texture-painted with a glossy enamel paint. All done by hand a hundred or more years ago. No two of these were ever alike. AGE:This piece was simply stamped NIPPON in red, which indicates that it was made and exported sometime between 1891-1921. "Japanese porcelain made for export to the United States from 1891 to 1921 is called "Nippon Porcelain" because the word "Nippon" was on each piece. The word "Nippon" was required by the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890." CONDITION: Pre-owned and kept as a display item. Quite heavy porcelain. In very good condition. No damage. No cracks, no scratches or utensil marks. Bright enamel design. No paint loss. Very attractive old Asian export plate, brightly colored in pinks and teals, navies and fuschias, browns and whites, with traditional Japanese birds and flowers throughout. Very nice!
