Java Moss / Taxiphyllum barbieri. Easy Low Light Aquarium Plant

Description: You will be getting 0.8 oz / 22.68 grams per order as pictured in plastic bag. One order is perfect for mini shrimp or guppy tank, buy 2 or 3 for larger tanks. Moss is not uniform in density like sand, I don't believe in selling by volume, as it can be fluffed loose to softball size, 4 or 8 oz cup and still be the same weight. ***Multiple portions will be combined into larger plastic bag that's convenient to ship, after all I am selling moss, not bags. Moss is sold by weight, not by bag count. *** Super easy to grow, low light, survives in wide water temperature and hardness range, helps to clear water and provide places for your fries to hide. A great way to introduce nitrification bacteria from a established tank. I have setup many new tanks, instead of waiting weeks for cycling process, I just put in a few bunches of Java moss, the plant consumes enough nutrients from water that no swings where measured. It's excellent biological filter, I am doing monthly water changes instead of every week and water are much clearer than before. Most fish will not eat it, but my gold fish and small koi will graze on them when other food are not available. Smaller fish can find enough microorganisms growing on its many surfaces to eat. All fish and shrimp look great after weeks long vacation, much cleaner and reliable than feeder cube & machines. A must for breeding. It provides protection shelter and food sources for juveniles. **** avoid browning and general moss care *** There are many great resources on planted tank care info online... Based on personal experience and customer feedback I will post some tip here regarding Java moss: It's greener and thicker when slowly grown without added CO2. Much harder to achieve a balance with CO2 injection, increased lighting and fertilization. It is the perfect low tech tank plant. It will survive in standing water but water movements helps to carry nutrient rich water to the plant. Does much better in my unheated goldfish tank, partly due to larger bio load. *** update Sep 2023: After 7 years selling as hobbyist, now I find 10 times as much seller and large commercial vendor... I still get asked by buyer how to grow the moss faster. The truth is that most aquarium plants can be grown really fast and big out of wate with fertilized solution spray as many store purchased plant are grown. Breathing real air help them get bigger and faster without fighting algea. These plants will not do well when you transfer to submerged environment, those old leaves can't adapt to low concentration of desolved air in water, they will suffer if not mass die off. Do not be fooled by the lush green big growth picture of commercial plant seller. Plants grown submerged in low tech aquarium will adapt to your environment much faster. To me it make sense to buy from hobbyists than from big vendors shipping from who knows where. My plants are all grown submerged in lowtech tanks without CO2 injection and additional fertilization besides fish poop. I do keep few oyster shells & add sea salt in the tank for additional mineral, as local tap water is really soft. CO2 injection will make submerged moss grow much faster, but will require additional lighting, fertilization and more water change. With slow growing moss it is more likely to have algea blooms. *** 1. Bleach & Hydrogen Peroxide: Do not bleach or peroxide dip the moss unless you have enough knowledge and experience with the methods. Few customer and my own experiments concluded moss is very sensitive, dose and timing is difficult to control. Dead moss appears brown and do not break down as fast as other plants. Use quarantine bucket or tank to starve bacteria or snails is a much safer method than chemical warfare. 2. Salt: If your moss turned brown quickly all the leaves are brown after putting in tank, check salt level of the water. Salt level can creep up if you don't have regular water change and only top off to compensate for evaporation. Moss should do fine in water suitable for drinking. In few cases customer finally identified water softener machines be the source of high salt level, while most fish can adjust to the higher salinity but plants will be stunned if not killed. Aquarium water need to be bucketed in from outside garden faucet before salt treatment. However, in areas with very softwater, like Sacramento, some parts of SF Bay, water came out of faucet with TDS below 30 PPM, I add sea salt and oyster shells in water for added mineral in water. I use a digital TDS meter to keep TDS under 600 PPM. 3. PH: High water PH affects solubility of nutrient and minerals and how they uptake into plants. Based on experience, algae easily out compete moss in alkaline water over PH 8, Use phosphate free acid buffer to control PH. 4. Over feeding: Because moss grow so slow, over feeding, inadequate water change, not enough light can provide a condition where algea out compete moss and cover moss with dark brown skin. Moss make a excellent Biological Nutrient Filter, when enough are present relative to the tank bio-load. 5. Lighting, browning leaves While moss can survive and grow well in low light, I often find moss in the bottom of densely planted tank to be covered by algea or turn brown. Browning it's also common when moss is moved from outside to a inside tank, or after long shipment and put into a new environment. The brown leaves will be mixed with green healthy leaves in this case, be patient, plant will recover after adjusting to new environment. I use SAE, cherry shrimp & rosy barbs to control algae. As a slow growing low light plant, i find moss growing thicker greener & algae free in tanks with shorter light cycles, 4 to 6 hour LED/CFL + diffused natural lights from nearbywindows. Tanks with longer light cycles have more algea outbreak and moss growth actually sufferers because nutrients are consumed by algae and other faster growing plants. ************************************ Over grown in my tanks! Green & healthy as reported by satisfied customers. My fish and shrimps are breeding none stop with the moss covered tank. Since moss never have uniform density, depend on how the moss ball is presented, actual weight can be all over the scale if selling by volume, inch, or size. My shipment will be weighted individually. Single order is 0.8 oz weighted when moist. Check mine reviews, almost every one think the portions are great. To establish a consistent portion size, In it's normal state, the moss are weighed with moisture out of tank. Live moss contains 95% water and the moisture can quickly evaporate and escape due to the large surface area of the moss, thus I can not guarantee a consistent weight arriving at your door. All moss will be pressed flat shipped in plastic mailer, and will not look as much as fluffed bunch in picture, but will look much larger submerged and fluffed loose. In cases of dehydration, moss will quickly recover its moisture after submerged in tank water, but may take few days to settle down & start growing. This shipping method has proven safe and convenient for me for 7 years and thousands of shipment. If you don't like moss pressed flat, please buy from other seller. So far more than 3 thousand orders have shipped with 99% survival rate. Take a picture of the package and let me know if moss didn't survive the shipment, I will send you another bag free of charge or refund your money. Few have gone missing in the USPS system and two returned to me more than a month later alive. I will ship Monday through Wednesday to avoid moss sitting in the post office. Based on experience, some package to east coast can be delayed more than two weeks beyond seller's control, especially during holidays and in bad weather
