John Coltrane's turning point 1960 release featuring the iconic title track and "Naima". One of the most influential jazz albums of all time! 180 gram 45rpm double LP Mastered directly from the original master tapes by Ryan K. Smith of Sterling Sound Pressed on a Quality Record Press Film laminated by Stoughton Printing Tip-on old style double pocket spread Jacket Released in 1960, Giant Steps was a turning point album for John Coltrane, cementing the sax legend's reputation as one of the most influential and innovative musicians in jazz history, bringing jazz to an increasingly mainstream audience as well as garnering significant critical acclaim. This was John Coltrane's debut for Atlantic, but he was playing and recording alongside Miles Davis. Within three weeks, Coltrane had completed another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, with Davis and others, and then began work on this album. Here Coltrane (tenor saxophone) is essentially sandwiched between two different trios. Recording began in early May 1959, with two sessions featuring Tommy Flanagan (piano), Art Taylor (drums), and Paul Chambers, the only band member besides Coltrane who played on all dates. When recording resumed in December of the same year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) joined the band, without Miles Davis, of course, and without Bill Evans, who was featured on "Freddie the Freeloader" from "Kind of Blue," an alternate The lineup was recreated. At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane's tenor solo. All seven tracks on the original Giant Steps are by Coltrane. He essentially began rewriting the jazz canon with solo-centric material, allowing the solos to be infinitely more engaging. This culminates in a frenetic playing style that uses melodic phrasing that renowned jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately called "sheets of sound." The chord progression of the Giant Step consists of a unique set of chords that create a central key that is a long third degree apart. Since then, jazz musicians have used it as a practice piece, with the difficult chord changes presenting "a kind of ultimate harmonic challenge" and serving as a gateway to modern jazz improvisation. Several of the songs on the album later became jazz standards, most notably "Naima" and "Giant Steps." The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected the album as part of its proposed "core collection," calling it "Train's first truly iconic record." In 2003, the album was ranked #102 on Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, #103 on the 2012 revised list, and #232 on the 2020 revised list. Undeniably perfect music requires a definitive sound and a top-notch package. This reissue was mastered directly from the original master tapes by Ryan K. Smith of Sterling Sound and cut at 45 RPM. It was pressed at Quality Record Press and housed in a chip-on old-style spread double pocket jacket with film lamination by Stoughton Printing. Overall, "Giant Steps" is not only a definitive triumph, but also a defining moment in John Coltrane's career. Its innovative composition, masterful performance, and profound influence on jazz have made it an essential entry in Coltrane's discography and an enduring masterpiece in the genre's history.
