JUDAICA Wash Painting ~ THE UNWED MOTHER ~ c1920 French Jewish WOMAN ARTIST

Description: An evocative early twentieth century grisaille wash painting depicting an unwed teenage mother and her child by French Jewish artist Laurence Rachel Levy-Bloch (1894-?), an artist known primarily for her published illustrations chronicling Jewish life in Paris. It is titled by the artist "La fille-mère", an archaic French term for a young single mother. The drawing measures 12 1/8 x 15 3/4 inches and it is signed and titled in the lower right corner. It is drawn of heavy wove paper with mild age toning and the reverse shows some old tape adhesive to the top edge, otherwise in excellent condition. Laurence Rachel Levy-Bloch (1894-?) was born in Vesoul, Franche-Comté to an Alsatian Jewish family. She studied at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille and under Luc-Olivier Merson in Paris. She exhibited regularly in the 1920s and 30s at the Salons des Independants, the Salons des Automne and at the Tuileries. Her drawings were published in the Jewish journal "Kadimah"; the woman's magazine "Eve"; and the culturally important "L'Illustration Juive". The art historian Emmanuel Bénézit noted that "She depicted with great verve and tenderness the typical scenes of the life of Jewish shopkeepers in Paris".
