KING PLEASURE I'm In The Mood For Love / Red Top; 45, Prestige 7", 1952 VG+ Jazz

Description: I purchased a massive estate-sale lot of over 2,000 vintage 45s in seven crates, all records sleeved. Owner was a savvy collector, it's loaded with old soul, rock, R&B, doo wop, Northern Soul, hip-hop, funk, obscurities, rarities, promos, novelties, etc. I will be listing quite a few over the coming months, stay tuned! Early Prestige 45, jazz vocalist King Pleasure (real name Clarence Beeks) was an early master of vocalese, where a singer sings words to a famous instrumental solo. King Pleasure first achieved popularity by singing the Eddie Jefferson vocalese classic "Moody's Mood for Love," based on a James Moody saxophone solo to "I'm in the Mood for Love". Pleasure's recording in 1952 is considered a jazz classic. He cites Jefferson as an influence and predecessor. He and Betty Carter also recorded a famous vocalese version of "Red Top," a jazz classic penned by Kansas Citian Ben Kynard and recorded by Gene Ammons and others.
