Description: Two aging Athenians, Pithetaerus and Euelpides, fed up with life in Athens and the constant arguing among the lawyers, the gibbering of the poets and philosophers, and pestering by tax collectors, leave the city and search for Epops, king of the birds, to convince him to build a new city in the sky--Cloud Cuckoo Land--where they, too, can live "free as the birds." Filled with crass humor, topical references, and magical transformations, the play has been seen as an allegory of the political situation in Athens during the Peloponnesian War, and also as an early example of the folly of Utopian schemes. Dudley Fitts' translation is rightly hailed as the best modern translation of this perennial masterpiece. Profusely decorated by Marian Parry, designed by Bert Clarke and printed at the Thistle Press.
