Description: Limoges Elite Bawo Dotter 8" Plate P&B Studio Green Purple Floral GOLD 1900-1914 Elegant Decorative Hand Painted PLATE 8" from ELITE WORKS (Bawo & Dotter) Limoges, France, GARLANDS of PURPLE & WHITE VIOLETS w/ LEAVES & WHITE LILY of the VALLEY, Scalloped & Beaded Rim w/Intricate GOLD Trim, circa 1900-1914 DESCRIPTION: The decorative plate was manufactured in the Elite Works Studio and hand painted in the P&B ( Pitkin & Brooks) Studio by a talented artist. The designer of the decoration was most talented. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The gold trim on the beaded rim is very rich looking and accents the scalloping & beading. The garlands are composed of purple and white violets with their green leaves The white violets have raised white accenting making them stand out. The inner garland is composed of lily of the valley blooms & their leaves reaching towards the center of the plate. CONDITION: While this decorative plate is classified as used, its condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. Overall, the gold trim is solid & glossy. The inner gold trim next to the green on the lily flowers does have 8 small breaks in the gold. We can't tell if this is after market wear or the intention of the artist as these small breaks occur next to the 8 curved rows of raised beads. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The plate has a diameter of 8" and a height of 1". HISTORY/MARKS: In the 1860’s, Bawo & Dotter was established in New York City for the purpose of importing china, especially Limoges porcelain. The firm established its own decorating studio in Limoges, France in the early 1870’s named The Elite Works. Bawo & Dotter began manufacturing its own china in 1896 in Limoges. The green mark on this plate is the underglaze white ware mark #5 (Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition by Mary Frank Gaston) which was used 1900-1932. In addition, an overglaze decorating red mark is from P&B (Pitkin & Brooks) and was used from 1900-1914. This makes the time period for this plate 1900-1914.
