Description: Beautiful (rare) 19th Century Coin Silver Punch Ladle by James Watts (Philadelphia) This lovely punch ladle is made by the prolific Philadelphia silversmith, James Watts. Watts is listed in De Silves’ “Philadelphia City Directory” as early as 1835, with an address at “Federal and 2nd.” Forty-six years and eight addresses later, Watts was still listed as a smith in a Philadelphia city directory-Gopsill’s this time-at 32 Hudson Street, James A. According to the “Philadelphia Public Ledger,” James Watts died June 1, 1888. The coin silver punch ladle measures 13” in length and 3 ½” across. It weighs approximately 12 ounces. The hallmark is Watts’ horse head over a chevron and is also stamped coin. It’s distinguished by the beautiful bird design/engraving on the handle. There are only four known engraved patterns by Watts at this time and the bird design is the most striking. There is a monogram on the back handle. The overall design is delicate and intricate without being overdone. If you are not a collector who has to add the ladle to their collection, it is the perfect, unique wedding gift. One that will be remembered and appreciated for a long time. More pictures on request.
