Description: Washington Confronts Lee Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey June 28, 1778 By Mark Maritato Signed Open Edition Paper Print Overall Size 22" x 17" Image Size 19" x 14-5/8" This painting was commissioned by the Monmouth battlefield Park in New Jersey for the 2013 relaunch of their newly remodeled visitors center as one of 7 Paintings done specifically for that project. This painting depicts George Washington Confronting Charles Lee. June 28th, 1778, Charles Lee was Washington's subordinate commander (2nd in Command) in charge of the advanced force of about 5,000 Continental troops. When Lee caught up with Sir Henry Clinton's British Regulars outside of Monmouth Courthouse, he failed to give his officers clear orders which resulted in a piecemeal deployment and disorganized attack on the British lines. The confusion resulted in a tactical retreat with the British Troops in pursuit right on the heels of Lee's troops. Washington, coming up behind Lee with the main force rode ahead with his staff and began running into retreating troops from Lee's force. A drummer told Washington that the Army was in full retreat. Incredulous, Washington rode ahead to check out the situation for himself. In a largely empty field just south of the Monmouth Road (today the Englishtown - Freehold Rd) Washington met with Lee and had a heated exchange followed. Washington demanded to know why Lee was retreating. Lee was quick to blame his subordinate commanders for not understanding and following his orders. Washington ended the meeting abruptly, then quickly rode back to start deploying the main force to meet the British and also rally Lee's force.
