Harold "Matt" Matson, Ruth Handler, and Elliot Handler founded Mattel, originally named Mattel Creations, in January 1945 in a Los Angeles garage. Initially selling picture frames, the company soon expanded into dollhouse furniture made from frame scraps. Due to health issues, Matson sold his share to the Handlers in 1946, after which Ruth Handler took over leadership. In 1947, Mattel achieved its first success with a toy ukulele called "Uke-A-Doodle." The company was incorporated in Hawthorne, California, in 1948. In 1950, Albert C. Carter and Abe Bookman invented the Magic 8-Ball, a toy now owned by Mattel. The company became a pioneer in TV advertising, starting as the first sponsor of the Mickey Mouse Club TV series. In 1957, Mattel released the Fisher-Price Corn Popper and Xylophone, and later acquired Fisher-Price on August 20, 1993. The Barbie doll, introduced on March 9, 1959, quickly became Mattels best-selling toy. In 1960, Mattel launched Chatty Cathy, a talking doll voiced by June Foray, which led to a surge of pull-string talking dolls and toys in the 1960s and 1970s. The Ken doll was introduced in 1961.
