MINT UNSHARPENED UNIQUE ANTIQUE 1800s 11 5/8” ETCHED CLIP BLADE SHEFFIELD BOWIE

Description: MINT UNSHARPENED UNIQUE ANTIQUE 1800s 11 5/8” ETCHED CLIP BLADE SHEFFIELD BOWIE MINT UNSHARPENED UNIQUE ANTIQUE 1800s 11 5/8” ETCHED CLIP BLADE SHEFFIELD BOWIE MINT UNSHARPENED UNIQUE ANTIQUE 1800s SHEFFIELD BOWIE KNIFE ~ LARGE 11 5/8” ETCHED CLIP BLADE ~ 16 5/8” OVERALL This is a hefty Bowie knife by a renown Sheffield Bowie Maker that weighs 14.4 ounces or 408 grams. This Bowie is hand forged, hand ground, hand fitted, hand polished, and hand etched using only simple hand tools by Master Cutlers. Overall length is 16 5/8” with an 11 5/8” long x 1 1/2" wide clip blade made from 3/16” stock that swells slightly to 1 9/16” at the beginning of the 4 1/4" blade top false edge to the blade tip. The ricasso is hot stamped in 2 lines, and also Sheffield England in 2 lines on the blade flat. The blade tip is full and there are no nicks or sharpening marks on the blade with all of its original signature Sheffield crocus of Iron polish intact. The blade has a couple of spots of untouched, desirable, naturally occurring black spidering with one near the blade tip that take a century + to form and demonstrates genuine age with light handling marks. The blade has a 6 3/4 x 1 1/4” etched panel on the front display side in a Victorian style scroll, leaf and flower pattern. The backside of the blade also has a similar shaped etched panel with what appears to be mystical symbols of unknown origin and meaning. The 1 9/16” wide x 1/8” thick German silver oval cross guard is tight, as is the hilt. The hilt is made from one piece of carved & shaped oxbone with a German silver ferrule. The hilt is 4 1/2" long x 1 1/8” wide at the swell center, and tapers from the 1 1/4" pommel end to the 11/16/” wide ferrule. The handle width also tapers from 11/16” wide at the pommel to 9/16” wide at the ferrule. The blade tang extends all the way through the hilt and is secured by peening the end with a small German silver grommet. As is common with a single large piece of natural material that shrinks over time, there is a naturally occurring age crack that verified the age of the Bowie and adds character, along with a couple of thin naturally occurring hairline age cracks and random variations in coloration from handling. The firm of Unwin & Rodgers began with James Rodgers (b.1758-d.1828) who established Rodgers & Co. James Rodgers was joined by Phillip Unwin (b.1800-d.1878) in 1825. By 1828, Unwin & Rodgers appeared in a Sheffield directory as a manufacturer of pen and pocketknives on Charles Street, Sheffield. Unwin & Rodgers export market was the burgeoning American trade, including Bowies for the California Gold Rush, American native trade knives to North America, Dirks and Bowies for the US Civil War, post-Civil War hunting knives, and ‘expensive show knives’. Note that even after James Rodgers died in 1828 at aged 60, the 3-year-old business remained as Unwin & Rodgers until the death of Unwin’s eldest son, Phillip H. Unwin in 1909 that ended the business. Sheffield cutlery made for export to America was marked with the Sheffield England mark after 1891. New York was the U.S. center for imports and had a large consortium of gun engravers, etchers, and Jeweler that would create custom made to orders on demand. Unwin & Rodgers’ New York agent was Charles Congreve, who had moved to America in 1849, and became IXL’s agent as well. This Bowie has a well centered, detailed, quality Victorian style etched blade front. The backside etched panel has unusual, large mystical symbols, and both etchings have slightly darker areas from handling and naturally occurring aging. The additional mystical symbols on the non-display side hilt are not engraved but acid etched, and applied at the same time as the back blade etch. Both appear to be of lesser quality than the front display side. This suggests this Bowie may have been imported with a factory front etched panel for the display side as an Exhibition or Display piece, and the back side was custom made to order and embellished by a retailer, jeweler, or cutler as a Presentation or Ceremonial Bowie knife that was made without a sheath. The mystical etched symbols are of unknown origin and meaning. This Bowie was created during the Golden Age of Sheffield Cutlery by Master cutlers, circa 1890’s. This handsome, large, heavy, quality, interesting, unusual and unique Bowie has lots of eye appeal, displays well, and would be perfect for any Bowie, Knife, Gentleman’s accoutrement, 1800’s, Sheffield Golden Age, mint condition collector, or advanced collector, aficionado and investor. An article written for this Bowie regarding the history of the maker and the Golden age available to the buyer. Buyers must keep their PayPal account in good standing. Buyers must show good faith conduct with the seller. Improper good faith conduct can include, but is not limited to, any means by which a buyer can attempt to unjustly benefit from the Seller's Terms & conditions or eBay's Buyer Protection plan. Moreover, good faith conduct does not include buyer's remorse, regardless of the reason. Returns will not be accepted such as changed my mind, found a better price, just didn't like it, Ordered by mistake, Arrived too late, etc. Returns will not be accepted and buyers will be reported to eBay when buyer makesfalse claims such as doesn't match description or photos, doesn't seem authentic, Doesn't fit, Wrong item sent, Missing parts or pieces, Doesn't work or defective, Arrived damaged. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller. Due to a myriad of International and U.S. Federal, State, Territory, County, City or Local law(s), ordinance(s), restrictions(s) or regulation(s), some articles shipped via U.S.P.S. may have restrictions and / or regulations that may apply to your article(s) shipped to a U.S. address. Buyers are responsible for knowing if any International, Federal, State, Territory, County, City or Local law(s), ordinance(s), restrictions(s) or regulation(s) may apply to your article(s) shipped to your ship to your address; and buyers are responsible for any loss if any prohibited or restricted item(s) shipped to your ship to address is confiscated for any reason. Any item returned must be pre-approved by the seller and received by seller within 7 days from receipt. If a buyer claims the item is damaged in shipping, it must send photographic proof on eBays email system, gain agreement with the seller, and item must be returned before buyer enters a feedback comment and before any exchange, credit or refund is issued. Buyer must use appropriate shipping, delivery confirmation and / or signature confirmation (items $250 ) and/or insurance at the buyers expense. Restocking fee, partial refunds and refunds are negotiable when buyers are dealing in good faith. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ALL BUYERS AGREE TO SELLERS RETURN POLICY THAT SUPERSEDES EBAYS RETURN POLICY FOR ALL ITEMS. v.9.19.2020 Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
