One Large, Unique Lava Rock Planter– All Natural, for Succulents and Air Plants

Also known as "scoria" or "cinder", it was hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona. With a base that's roughly 6½" long and standing about as tall, this somewhat angular, red / reddish-brown lava rock offers a couple of large cracks and crevices running across its surface, along pockmarks in a variety of shapes and sizes. Those features would make it an ideal planter ... perfect for small succulents, air plants, or certain varieties of epiphytics. Scoria's most recognizable feature are the pockmarks appearing all along the surface. When they were first expelled from volcanoes that were active here over a half million years ago, hot gases were captured within the molten lava and trapped as it cooled, leaving thousands of tiny "pores" within the rock itself. These pores offer natural benefits that help certain varieties of succulents to even thrive compared to other planting methods. They allow air to pass to their shallow roots, while retaining moisture as water easily drains. Their native roughness offers a place for plants to grab hold and take root, too (it even promotes greater root growth and expansion). And the rock surface retains heat long after the sun sets, offering natural protection. Each of our rocks are picked up because something about them caught our eye.
