Description: Handsome double-page antique lithographed map of Kansas and Nebraska in original hand color. The image area measures a generous 35.8 x 54 cm [14" x 21¼"], with a decorative grapevine border. The map was drawn and engraved by William H. Gamble and published in Philadelphia by Samuel Augustus Mitchell. Longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington. There's scant settlement in a large part of Nebraska north of the Platte River and west the 98th meridian, an area with no county or township markings. The only named features are two fresh water sources, a saline lake, and a spidery network of rivers. Named places and features in the more settled parts of both Kansas and Nebraska include the Omaha Agency, the Sioux City & Pacific Railroad, Abilene, Manhattan, the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad, Coffeeville, Neosho River, Fort Riley, Hiawatha, Lincoln, Beatrice, Arkansas River, Tecumseh, Osceola, Fort Kearny, Concordia, Fort Hays, Cimarron, Camp Criley, and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. Longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington, and the map is titled: "County & Township Map of the States of Kansas and Nebraska. It is dated 1874 in the lower margin. Condition: It is in excellent condition, with a vertical center fold, as issued, and no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
