Original c1950 Kent Wetherill AMERICA Pictorial MAP of NEWBERRY STORES Painting

Description: ORIGINAL c1954 KENT WETHERILL 'MAP OF NEWBERRY STORES' PICTORIAL MAP PAINTINGThis is a wonderful original. This is an original watercolor and ink 'A Map of the Newberry Stores' by Kent Wetherill. A very cool piece of original Americana. Newberry stores was one of the earlier American 5 and Dime stores. This is a large map of the US surrounded by wonderful scenes of cities and pilgrims lining the bottom and sides and a wonderful eagle medallion at the top. Sheet measures 21 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches. Each state has the number of stores in it in red ink. I added them up and there are 475 which is the exact amount of stores they had in 1954, just before the death of the founder, JJ Newberry. I am wondering if this was something done for the owner in his final year. Outstanding original condition. I have not taken it out of the matte and frame but shows rippling to the sheet so it is not laid down. Matte shows a little soiling but nothing too bad and original wood frame is complimentary and ready to hang. Frame measures 27 3/4 x 35 1/4 inches.It is signed lower right corner by Kent Wetherill. Wetherill was a relatively unknown but is credited with a couple of pictorial maps. He made a Cape Cod work that was published by Rosemary House in the 1920s or 1930s. He also did one of Vatican City. I have seen that one dated to the 1930s. Worldcat shows a map of Florida from 1936 by Kent Lawrence-Wetherill that I would imagine would have to be the same map maker. That is about all I have found about the artist. Really a wonderful original painted map and piece of Americana Folk Art. CHECK THE PICTURES ON THIS EXCELLENT PIECE!!!
