Description: Jacques Germain was an abstract painter of the post war School of Paris. He worked to develop a technique cal led Abstraction Lyrique which valued expression above all confinements of geometric spaces. He started his early training at sixteen at L'Academie Moderne and worked with the cubist painter Fernand Leger and later at the Bauhus in Germany until the outbreak of WW II. He continued where he left off after the war with contemporaries Jean Arp and Hans Hartung. Germain produced a large volume of work in his long career. He worked in many different mediums: oil, acrylic, gouache and ink . He had a many solo shows and retrospectives in France, the United States and Britain throughout the mid-century period as he represented the abstract expressionist vanguard of the period. This ink on paper work is very representative of his style with the pen- very open and spontaneous. The delicate but stark graphic quality makes the work hold its own. The work measures 9 ½" by 12" and the mount dimensions are 16" by 20". The paper is in excellent shape but with very slight toning consistent with estimated age- mid 50s to early 60s.
