Description: PIERRE CORNUBERT (TENOR) (PARIS, FRANCE, 14 MAY, 1863 – PARIS, FRANCE, 27 JUNE, 1922) He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and made his debut in 1887 at the Opéra-Comique as Daniel in Le chalet by Adam. In 1889, Cornubert created the role of the Byzantine Herald in the premiere of Massenet’s Esclarmonde at the Opéra-Comique. He then performed in Rouen, Marseille, and Montpellier. Starting in 1899, he began his international career, singing at the Teatro Tacón in Havana and at the Teatro Rinascimento in Mexico City that same year. He was subsequently engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he debuted in 1900 as Vasco da Gama in Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine. At the Metropolitan Opera, he also performed in Gli Ugonotti, Roméo et Juliette, Carmen, and Pagliacci. In 1904, as a member of the San Carlo Opera Company, he made guest appearances at Covent Garden in London. From 1899 to 1900, Cornubert sang at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, where he appeared in Andrea Chénier with Mario Sammarco and Eva Tetrazzini, and in Guglielmo Ratcliff with Febea Strakosch and Giuseppe Pacini. During this period, he also performed at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Turin, where he sang in Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine alongside Mary D'Arneiro and Alessandro Arcangeli. In 1903, he performed in Cairo, and two years later, he was in Oporto, where he appeared in Giordano’s Andrea Chénier at the Teatro São João. In 1919, he became a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. His wife, Suzanne Cornubert, was also an opera singer.
