Description: Rare Antique Silver Plated Hukin & Heath Orange Peeler Pat. Number 10065, c1910. The Victorian and Edwardian period produced some weird and wonderful inventions. In a magazine or journal dated December 12, 1894 issue of “The Jewelers’ Circular and Horological Review” there was an article entitled “The Eating of the Orange…Dainty Devices for the Proper Eating of this Delicious and Seasonable Fruit”. The first paragraph reads: “The present is, perhaps, the best orange season that dealers in the fruit trade ever remember having had. Oranges medicinally as a tonic and for their refreshing properties as a fruit grow steadily in favour from year to year as the public learns more and more to appreciate the fruit’s manifold good qualities. Advanced orange lovers have even taken up an “orange cure” which necessitates the consumption by the patient of anywhere from one to three dozen oranges daily, but which is said to remove from its disciples all bodily pains and ills and to leave the system in a particularly clean and healthy condition.” The article continues on to describe the various sterling and silver plated orange knives, spoons, peelers and orange cups being offered by multiple manufacturers, with illustrations and advertisements included on the four following pages. This orange peeler followed this fashion. This very rare cutlery item that was most likely made by the renowned silver smith and silver plate manufacturer, Hukin & Heath. I can only find other examples of this design in silver hallmarked for 1910 by Hukin & Heath, it seems that Patent Number 10065 was exclusive to them. There are no maker marks only the patent number 10065. This example has a silver plated peeler with a carved handle. One drags the sharp bladed edge along the peel to assist with peeling. The utensil has a length of 12.7cm and is in very good used condition. The embossed handle is beautiful and features oranges, leaves, a crest and a turreted entrance. A rare collectable piece.
