Description: This super rare print called AEROSTATION is a compilation of 1700s era hot air balloons by John Wilkes originally printed in 1796. This is a vintage print and I cannot be certain of the date of this print other than knowing it was framed in/around the 1940s, maybe earlier. This is perfect for an aviation historian and those who love hot air balloons. Overall size is approximately 14.5" x 11.75" Illustration is of four famous balloons at the corners (the Montgolfier balloon of 11/21/1783; J.P.F. Blanchard's Channel crossing balloon; J.A.C. Charles' gas balloon of August 1783; and Vincenzo Lunardi's Union Jack balloon from which Mr. Baldwin obtained the aerial view of Chester as shown in the center. Additional historical information about this print can be found on the Smithsonian Institute, Smithsonian Air &Space Museum website here https://www.si.edu/object/aerostation%3Anasm_A19680101000 FRAMING It is believed this was framed in the 1940s or 50s by a NYC framer named James S. Kelleher as seen by their original sticker on the back and comparing with census data. Basic green distressed frame with glass in great condition. No chips or cracks. DEFECTS (See photos.) Photos show defects in the frame and print. Frame is scuffed from sitting in storage for years as well as the brittle backing. Water damage on the back doesn't appear to affect the actual print. Water damage to the front of the print look to be before it was framed based on the back not lining up to the front. Overall it's in fair condition.
