Description: ROMANIA Constantin I. Istrati president of the Romanian Academy RARE PHOTO ( THE PHOTO IS STATED ON THE CARDBOARD ) SIZE: 8.3 X 10.6 CM Constantin I. Istrati (b. September 7, 1850, Roman – d. January 17, 1918, Paris) was a Romanian academician, chemist, doctor, full member (1899) and president of the Romanian Academy in the period 1913 - 1916.Constantin I. Istrati became a doctor of medicine from Bucharest in 1877 and was a collaborator of Carol Davila, whom he sometimes substituted in the course of medical chemistry. In 1885, Constantin I. Istrati also obtained his doctorate in chemistry, in Paris, after 3 years of research guided by professors Adolphe Wurtz and Charles Friedel. By decree no. 2029 of September 20, 1883, Dr. Constantin Istrati was appointed professor of physics at the School of Bridges and Roads in Bucharest, replacing Emanoil Bacaloglu, who had resigned. On April 1, 1889, Professor Constantin I. Istrati was elected a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy. Constantin I. Istrati was appointed the general commissioner of the organization of the Carol I park, inaugurated in 1906. He founded the organic chemistry school at the University of Bucharest, where he was a professor. He was an honorary member of several foreign scientific societies. He did research on Romania's natural wealth (salt, oil, amber, ozokerite, etc.). By studying the halogenated derivatives of benzene, he discovered a new class of dyes, which he called franceines. For this invention he was awarded the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1889. He isolated a new substance from cork, friedeline. He is the author of an Elementary Course of Chemistry, for high school students and baccalaureate candidates, published in 1891 and translated into French and Spanish. With the work Study relative to a general nomenclature in organic chemistry (1913) he made valuable contributions to the fixation of scientific nomenclature. As a representative of scientific-naturalistic materialism, Constantin Istrati defended the concept of the unity of matter. He combated energitism and, more generally, physical idealism and agnosticism, generated by the crisis in physics. Towards the end of his life, his philosophical views underwent a major change, moving from atheism to fideism. Istrati carried out an intense social activity in the medical, cultural and scientific fields. He founded the "Romanian Society of Sciences" (1890) and the "Romanian Association for the Advancement and Spread of Sciences" (1902). In 1967, the Central State Library of Romania created an unpublished bibliography, which contains 128 book titles and periodical articles in Romanian and French, written by Constantin I. Istrati and edited between 1869 - 1916. Political activityBetween April 11, 1899 and January 9, 1900, Constantin I. Istrati was the Minister of Public Works in the Government of George Gr. Cantacuzino (1) (April 11, 1899 - July 6, 1900). Between February 26 and March 12, 1907 Constantin I. Istrati was the Minister of Agriculture, Industry, Trade and Domains in the Government of George Gr. Cantacuzino (2) (December 22, 1904 - March 12, 1907).
