IN THE WALKER ART GALLERY, LIVERPOOL When exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1887 this dramatic Picture was hailed with acclamation as one of the most daring works of the younger generation of artists. Said one writer, " By far the most stimulating fact to be chronicled of the Royal Academy is to be found in the vigour and freshness of some of our younger painters. The attempt may be occasionally allied to rash endeavour, the ideal may be imperfectly realised, yet when knowledge and zeal go hand in hand with daring—as in Mr. Solomon's 'Samson,' perhaps the most ambitious picture of the year—it is impossible not to feel that the Academy has gained greatly as a representative institution in thus enlarging its borders. Experimental, in a sense, such a work may be, but experiment even when carried out with less than half the power and conviction of Mr. Solomon, is something better than stagnation and altogether the best presage of renewed health in the body artistic that just now could be desired." Within ten years of that time—in 1896—Mr. Solomon had been elected an Associate, and in yet another decade (1906) a full member of the Academy. It was in 1886 that his "Cassandra" was hung on the end wall of Room No. VIII. of Burlington House, a dominating position where it could be seen through the vista of the three preceding rooms, a position which was accorded to him for several subsequent years, with "Samson" (1887), "Niobe" (1888), "The Judgment of Paris" (1890), "Orpheus" (1891) and "Hippolyta" (1892). In "Samson" Mr. Solomon displayed the virility of his talent to the full. This swirl of strife is a perfect realisation of the scene that must have ensued when the traitorous Delilah—has there ever been such a successful presentation, too, of this byword among women ?exclaimed "The Philistines be upon thee, Samson !" Mr. Solomon entered Heatherley's school at the age of sixteen and then passed into the Royal Academy Schools. Thence he went to Paris and studied under Cabanel, and then on to Munich. A journey through Italy and another through Spain and Morocco were accomplished before he finally settled in London.
