Selected Letters of PLINY [the Younger], ed. by H. M. POTEAT | VG 1937 HC 88274

Description: Available from Bluebird Books: Selected Letters of Pliny edited by Hubert McNeill Poteat in a first hardcover edition Description: A likely first edition (so indicated by lack of subsequent printings). A collection of letters written by Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, or Pliny the Younger, intended for the English-speaking student in Latin. Edited by Hubert McNeill Poteat, who explains in his preface that his intent was to keep the content of this work interesting for the undergraduate student of Latin, as part of ". . .a desperate battle for its continued existence. . ." The text is presented in Latin, with accompanying English-language notes and translation of certain words, on each page. A prolific letter-writer, Pliny (c.AD 61-62 - c.AD 113) was in awe of his uncle, Pliny the Elder, who helped raise and educate him. In full blue cloth-covered boards with cover & spine titling and decorations in gilt. Volume lacks a dust jacket. With mild sunning & chafing to spine, else a tightly-bound, sound copy.Book Condition*: Very Good Dust Jacket Condition*: none City: Boston Publisher: D. C. FINE - Approaches the condition of AS NEW, but lacking the crispness of a new book. These books or dust jackets should have no defects. NEAR FINE - Approaching FINE but with slight flaws. VERY GOOD - Describes a book or dust jacket that does show some small signs of wear or slight damage. GOOD - Describes the average used worn book or jacket that has flaws and/or damages. (An old bookseller said it best, "In rare books, Good ain't good".) FAIR - Worn book or jacket that is stained, has loose pages, tears, or otherwise has some sort of significant damage or other issue. POOR - Describes a book that is worn, damaged, stained or otherwise beat-up, making it useful as a reading copy but possibly not a collector copy. A POOR dust jacket is likely heavily torn, chipped or otherwise damaged.(A ' + ' or a ' - ' can indicate a shading of these values...either a nudge up, or a nudge down.)
