Description: This is a vintage chrome postcard, postally used and postmarked 1939 from Newport News, Virginia. Postcard features a view of the SS America of the United States Lines. Postcard list the ship as new. It was launched in 1939 from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. The message on back indicates that the author witnessed the ship being launched and describes bands playing, whistles blaring and crowds cheering. The SS America was put into military service from 1941 to 1946 during World War II. It served as a cruise ship after World War II under different names, until it ran aground in 1994.
