St Sebastian was the son of a wealthy Roman family and was captain of the guard in the Roman Imperial Army. A favorite of the emperor Diocletian, he kept his conversion to Christianity secret for as long as he could, visiting imprisoned Christians during the emperor's persecutions of them; bringing them food and comfort. He converted a governor and many soldiers, and it is said he healed a brother soldier's wife by making the Sign of the Cross over her. Eventually he was charged as a Christian, and was sentenced to death. Tied to a tree and shot with arrows, he survived and was healed with the help of Saint Irene. He recovered and boldly returned to Diocletian and tried to convert him, unsuccessfully, and he was beaten to death.
