Stone Mountain Lunch on Robert E. Lee's Shoulder March 23, 1970 Photograph #2

Description: We go to estate sales regularly and come across a wide array of unique and rare items. We add to our growing online inventory daily. We pick up new items from all over the world and all over the US. We also have a growing customer wish list. If you'd like to, feel free to add us to your saved seller's list and let us know what you collect and/or need. We’d be honored to add you to our customer wish list.We ask what we consider to be a fair price for anything we sell and understand that our idea of a fair price may be someone else's 'that's too much' price. If that's the case, feel free to make us an offer and will consider it. We also have sales regularly, so check back often. There is always a Sale by TheBay!We bid on several lots of items of an online estate sale/auction for a lady who had passed away by the name of Mary Clemon Payne back in 2018. Mary Payne was the Executive Secretary for the Stone Mountain Memorial Association when it was formed to run Stone Mountain in 1958. Some of you may recall one of the trains that ran at Stone Mountain that was named The Mary Payne Train. It has since been replaced of course, but the park named it after her in her honor for her years of dedication to the park. You can read Mary's obituary online to learn more about the wonderful woman she was.Mary had a plethora of incredible Stone Mountain memorabilia and we were able to obtain quite a few very cool items, many of which are certainly one of a kind. We will be listing some items over the coming days, so if you're into Stone Mountain collectibles, we guarantee you that we'll be listing some items you are all but certain to never see for sale again. Now onto the item for sale. For sale is an 11" x 14" black and white photograph of the Lunch on the Confederate Memorial carving on Stone Mountain that was held on March 23, 1970.This photograph is an overhead shot looking down at six of the guests already seated at one of the tables with several members of the press milling about. It's sort of cool how you can see the way they put the floor of the platform down and a safety rail around the sculpture itself to close any gaps between the platform and the mountain to prevent anyone from falling off. This was a pretty cool event held prior to the official unveiling of the carving's progress later the same year. The lunch was on General Robert E. Lee's shoulder on the platforms that the carvers worked from when work began on the carving again in 1964 after a nearly 50 year hiatus. We have the signed guest list for the press, both radio and television, the invited guests and the members of the Stone Mountain Memorial Association who attended the event. We also have the program for this event and even the menu, as well as several other event related items. This event was held before the progess on the carving was unveiled at an official ceremony that was held on May 9 of the same year and was attended by several Georgia politicians and other dignitaries. We aren't sure who is who in the picture, but we did include a picture above of the invited guest list and the SMMA member guest list that attended the event. We trust none of the members of the media would be sitting down at the table for lunch. A little research and identifying the people at the table would be relatively easy.PLEASE NOTE: We have several photographs and other historical items from Stone Mountain. Feel free to take a look and as always, we're happy to combine shipping. This photograph is almost certainly a one of a kind, or at the most, there aren't more than a few copies anywhere. We can all but guarantee that you will not see this photograph for sale again unless the buyer decides to sell it.This photo is isn't in the best condition, as you can see in the pictures above, but it is too rare to just throw away. Most of the photo looks great, but the top has several noticeable creases with most being around the top left corner where there are also a couple short tears in the photo. The right side also has a tear a little over an inch long and a few light creases. This item will be shipped in a padded envelope via insured ground advantage with the USPS. We put all our items that ship in padded envelopes in between cardboard for extra protection during shipping. Thanks for looking and God bless!
